A very Sydney edition…

We’re not sure why, but there seems to be a bunch of fine music coming out of Sydney at the moment. Perhaps it’s the bright lights of Vivid inspiring people? Maybe it’s this semester of uni coming to an end? Maybe musicians are locking themselves up in their room and recording as they can’t afford to do anything else due to crippling rent prices? Who knows…

One thing we can all agree on is that you should follow our Locals Without Spotify playlist right here to hear all these acts (and many more). And also, can anyone lend us some cash for rent?

GOODSIDE

Goodside are easily the most compelling indie band we’ve heard in a long while. We premiered their debut tune ‘I’ve Been Feeling Something Lately’ about a month ago, and just when we were needing another fix they’ve hit us with a shiny new video that should keep the wolves at bay (for a while anyway). Directed by Matt Maule, the clip follows the heartstrung fantasies of singer Casey Logemann as she pines a little bit of office romance, and much like the song, it leaves a lasting impression – check it out below:

SINCLAIRE

Taking cue from acts like Gang Of Youths and The Killers, indie-pop outfit Sinclaire’s third offering ‘It’s Not Enough’ certainly packs an emotional punch. The song, which is driven by a relentless rhythm section and atmospheric guitars, allows vocalist Michael Cross to soar in ways that we haven’t heard on previous singles and has got us super excited for their debut EP which is coming at the end of the month. These guys tick all the boxes and have already received a fair bit of radio play, so we’re predicting big things from them this year.

POISON ABBEY

We stumbled across Poison Abbey’s debut single ‘Upmarket’ recently and immediately fell in love with the funky afro-disco vibes of the track. The crisp beat and breathy vocals on the tune sound like a collaboration between Letta Mbulu and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, with singer Jess Rogleff demonstrating a deft touch when it comes to treading the line between avant-garde and pop. The enigmatic duo have only played a small handful of shows with nothing announced at the moment – stay tuned.

EAGLE EYE JONES

Northern Beaches groovers Eagle Eye Jones are back again with another slice of smooth rock that you’ll be singing along to in no time. ‘Never Get You Down’ is the third single we’ve heard from the group, who have amassed a whopping 200K+ Spotify streams in about a year, which is testament to their skill in crafting psych-blues with more hooks than a fisherman’s convention at Bilgola beach. They’ll be performing it at The Lansdowne on June 27th with other LWA faves Velvet Trip, Charlie Gradon, and Hedy Lamarr (info/tickets here).

GOOCH PALMS

Finally we’ve got the Goochies aptly titled third record III and, as you’d expect, it’s jam-packed with their gritty garage anthems. One standout is ‘Coast To Coast’, a Ramones-esque ditty that refers to the whopping amount of travel the duo, who are notoriously devoted to touring, have done over the past few years. They’ve also just been announced as tour support for Grinspoon’s ‘Chemical Hearts’ shows in October (info here), which is pretty huge from the plucky Novocastrian underdogs.
