The Red Bull Music Academy Weekender kicked off last night, bringing 40 acts playing 11 gigs in Sydney until Sunday. While there’s no shortage of highlights – including Flight Facilities’ colossal show with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra – this Stones Throw showcase is absolutely essential. Taking over Manning Bar at Sydney University, Stones Throw are celebrating 20 years of expansive hip-hop production and DJ skills that boggle the mind, with a headline set from the label founder himself, the legendary Peanut Butter Wolf. Add in seasoned experts like J Rocc and Australians like Jonti, and this is gonna be a night to remember.
GIRLS is back for another night of mischief down at Plan B Small Club, with in-house residents Anissa, Ebony Boadu and Yemisul joined by special guest Sarsha Simone. Presented by IZMZ Magazine, t’s a night of Rap, R&B and Grime delivered by an all-female ensemble, bringing four hours of power and dancefloor action. It’s an all-star cast for this edition of Rapp Payback, delivering rap tunes for free at The Lord Gladstone. It’s being spearheaded by Triple J’s own Shantan Wantan Ichiban, while the dynamic duo of $ean’Don and Ma$e will also be spinning on the decks. Everybody’s favourite pink-haired DJ, Mowgli May is also on the decks – listen to the exclusive mix she made for us here and expect at least one song by Gucci Mane.
Celebrating the birthplace of hip-hop, So N.Y. is back for its sophomore edition to bring you tunes from the Golden Era to 2016. Head honchos Batesy and Das are in the house, as well as Honey Club’s G COO and West Sydney connoisseur Jordvn. 50 Cent, Dipset, Bobby Shmurda, Jay Z, Nicki Minaj, Mobb Deep – we’re keeping our fingers crossed to hear all of these tunes on Saturday night.
Red Bull Music Academy are closing off their Weekender with a bang, presenting the Australian live debut of Larry Heard as Mr. Fingers after a two-decade hiatus. The Chicago house legend has been spinning longer than a lot of us have been alive – and he will be taking over Carriageworks for a Sunday session that’ll also give you a soundtrack from one of dance music’s true pioneers.
