Dating back to 2019, the fan-fuelled phenomenon relates to Britney Spears’ father’s conservatorship over her. What is a conservatorship you ask? Don’t worry, we had to google it too. Basically, a conservatorship is enacted when one party is incapacitated an unable to look after their own finances and, in some cases, daily activities.
Following her much-publicised breakdown in 2008, Britney was twice sent to the psychiatric ward and it was during this time her father petitioned the Los Angeles County Superior Court to gain a temporary conservatorship. This was extended later in that year and is still in place, which means he essentially controls the millions of dollars she has earned having been one of the world’s most famous musicians.
A photographer who worked with her on her 2009 comeback tour, Andrew Gallery, recently shared a TikTok claiming that she had a letter given to him back then, though he was only able to release it now due to contracts. The letter states that lawyers threatened to take away her children if she didn’t divorce Kevin Federline and that she was seemingly under the control of her conservators.
Last year, in April, Britney reportedly checked herself into a mental institution. Though fashion blog Diet Prada allege this was done at the behest of her conservators after pics emerged of her and her boyfriend going to an In-N-Out Burger. The Diet Prada post below alleges that her father sent her to the psych ward as images of her going out and getting food on her own was an indication that she isn’t incapacitated and potentially capable of looking after her own money and life.
Around this time Britney made the following statement on Instagram saying, “I wanted to say hi, because things that are being said have just gotten out of control!!! Wow!!! There’s rumors, death threats to my family and my team, and just so many things crazy things being said. I am trying to take a moment for myself, but everything that’s happening is just making it harder for me. Don’t believe everything you read and hear.”
Since then, her Instagram posts which usually feature her in her mansion, have been riddled with comments from fans begging her to post a live video, or offering to help her. Some are asking whether she is leaving clues for them in her posts or hidden messages, but to date, she has never commented on the Free Britney movement or replied to any of the comments.
It’s hard to know what to believe here, but a public statement from Britney would probably go a long way to cool fans’ concern. And, if everything that is mentioned in the Diet Prada post is true, they have a lot to be concerned about. Stay tuned for more.
