While hosting Saturday Night Live over the weekend, Childish Gambino dropped his latest single ‘This Is America’, debuting the track by releasing the highly controversial music video online, shortly following the SNL broadcast.
The politically charged track jarringly transitions between a soulful choir harmonizing and a trap laden banger of a beat, setting the tone for raps that recourse observations on police brutality and the decadence of hip hop culture. The hook is a heavy chant, akin to his because the internet Era, “This is America, don’t catch you slippin’ up”, creating a searing look at America in 2018.
The music video… well the music has to been seen to be believed. A warning though, it is not for the faint of heart.
Childish Gambino AKA Donald Glover has an extremely busy 2018 lined up, in and out of music. Co-starring in Solo: A Star Wars Story coming out later this May and writing and starring in his hit show Atlanta. With no announcement yet on a new album, we can only cross our fingers and wait.
