Hot off performing on ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’, Gang of Youths are keeping the hype going with their latest release…

And it comes in the form of the music video for their recent single ‘in the wake of your leave’, which is out today. The new clip, which takes inspiration from the golden age of 1960s Hollywood, sees the band continue the cinematic nature of past visuals ‘the man himself’ and ‘unison,’ but with a theatre-heavy twist that we haven’t seen from the band until now.

Naturally, frontman David Le’aupepe takes centre stage in this number, leading a troupe of dancers as he dances through a surrealist recreation of 1960s London. Although it’s his first proper foray into the medium, the ‘Magnolia’ singer more than holds his own, moving with a similar fluidity to that of his live performances.

A highlight comes at around 3:16 where Le’aupepe and the dancers move in sync with each other, a steady wide shot showing them twisting, turning and jut utterly grooving down the main street of the makeshift cityscape. And with the anthemic crescendo ‘in the wake of your leave’ blaring in the background, the clip reaches an emotional high that’s totally uplifting.

Speaking on the dance-heavy new clip, director Joel Barney explains, “When I first heard the track, I knew the video had to be larger-than-life. Dave came to me with a ‘Singing in the Rain’ meets ‘Top Hat’ concept that paid homage to the great musicals of the ‘50s and ‘60s. We wanted to merge elements of old school Hollywood with a modern edge.”

Definitely one of the Sydney rock outfit’s most energetic clips yet, no doubt there’s plenty more on the way. Be sure to check it out above, and while you’re at it, cop tickets to their upcoming shows here and pre-save their upcoming album angel in realtime here.
