The type of song that can only be listened to at 2am in an underground bunker…

Following years of teasing, occasional singles and cryptic IG posts that gave birth to a whole new generation of conspiracy theorists, Sydney producer Golden Features has returned with his latest single, ‘Flesh’.

Finding common ground with recent releases like ‘Vigil’, ‘Touch’ and ‘Endit’ ft. Rromarin, the latest offering from the eclectic producer is vibrant, hard-hitting and filled with euphoria. But, unlike its predecessors, its noticeably darker and moodier (which is definitely saying something for Golden Features), with pulsating beats drums and driving baselines finding this abrasiveness that Features touched on in 2018’s Sect, but is now fully immersing himself in.

The highlight of the track however is the contrasting chant-like vocals and blaring synths at 1:50 that pierce through the Features soundscape for one of the most invigorating breakdowns in recent memory. Layers of intricate synths and haunting melodies subsequently intertwine, creating an atmosphere of both ecstasy and introspection that Features has become such a master of both in studio recording and on a live stage. It’s no doubt a nod to the Berlin dance floors the veteran producer frequented in early 2020, with the man himself explaining, “It was a direct response to my time in Berlin and a song that encapsulated everything I fell in love with on my journeys. I wrote it trying to express feelings of being under the weight of an 8-hour session in the rave. Overstimulated, anxious and completely terrified of facing the real world outside.”

Along with the new single, the ‘Medicate’ producer has today announced his highly anticipated sophomore album, Sisyphus, which is set to be released on July 7th. Poised to be antithesis to his collaborative work with US Duo Odesza, Bronson, along with 2018’s Sect, the new record from the Aussie dance mainstay is one of his most experimental yet, with Features himself adding, “For this album I wanted to push myself well beyond my comfort zone and try concepts that were unfamiliar to see what I was capable of.”

It’s no doubt an exciting time for dance fans across the nation, and with a slew of dates around the country just announced (cop tickets here), it looks like Golden Features and his murky beats will be impossible to escape this summer.
