Grimes is definitely a trailblazer in numerous facets, from her experimental music to her fashion sense and even her crazy baby names (still can’t get over that one). However, now she’s dipping her toes into the art world, and is making an absolute killing. Specifically, over the past weekend the singer racked up a crazy $7.6 million AUD in half an hour upon releasing her first digital artwork collection with her brother Mac Boucher.
The collection, titled WarNymph Collection Vol 1 was sold through an auction. But this was no normal auction, rather, a cryptocurrency auction. By now you’re probably wondering where the music factor comes in, but that’s just it, as Grimes, ever the genius she is, accompanied each digital art piece in the collection with exclusive audio (AKA music), all of which could only be purchased with non-fungible tokens. If you’re not in the loop with the various forms of currency in 2021 (don’t worry, it’s impossible to keep up), basically it’s a type of cryptographic token that cannot be exchanged or refunded.
The official description for the collection is so Grimes as well, focusing on identity and individuality in the digital age, reading “The first of her kind, WarNymph is a digital entity spliced from a pixel DNA of the organic human, Grimes. Merging the raw images of a photogrammetry scan, enunciating her iconic tattoos, with a retopologized mesh that was sculpted, modelled, and morphed into a variety of forms before being permanently sealed into the body of a baby angel, a cherub. She exists in the liminal state of the virtual world, a Grimes narrative universe, within an alternate history of mythology and the infinite fragments of the future. She is a pioneer in the rapidly expanding metaverse.
“Grimes, with the WarNymph project, explores the fluidity of identity in the virtual age: the ability to create, augment, and splinter ourselves into unlimited avatars, create boundless worlds, and build rich, complex lore.”
