Grimes is putting the music and AI worlds on notice with her latest venture, with the eclectic pop songstress today unveiling her new program, Elf.Tech. To use it, a user needs to input a recording of themselves singing, and the software will produce a rendition of the lyrics in Grimes’ voice. It’s like having your own personal Grimes in a box, except, this Grimes turns your pitchy and out of tune singing into an avant-garde display of vocal acrobatics.
Understandably, has been hailed as a win for fans and AI technology alike, and has already generated 15,000 voice transformations, despite only being in the Beta phase. But let’s not forget the real winner here: Grimes’ voice. Not only is it unique and captivating (and at times, slightly jarring), but now it’s being replicated and used by countless people around the world. It’s clear that Grimes’ voice is having its own 15 minutes of fame right now.
And in typical Grimes fashion, the multi-hyphenated creative has already found a way to monetise her latest form of expression, offering to lend her vocal likeness in exchange for 50% of the master recording royalties if users of the service choose to distribute their songs online.

It’s safe to say Grimes is fully embracing the digital world, and if elf.tech wasn’t evidence enough, the ‘Genesis’ singer has announced two new singles, titled ‘Music for Machines’ and ‘I Wanna Be Software.’ Here’s hoping we get a whole album full of artificial intelligence-inspired (and created) bangers from her sooner rather than later. For now, get a head start on your Grimes collabs with the official elf.tech Beta here.
