It seems the evidence that pill testing saves lives is starting to stack up after another successful trial resulted in punters discarding dangerous substances. With organisers of Groovin The Moo Canberra facilitating the testing – ACT is the only state/territory that allows it – over 230 festival attendees had a clearer idea of what was in the drugs they’d purchased.
Seven festivalgoers ditched their drugs which had traces of the potentially deadly n-ethylpentylone, and many self-regulated their intake, vowing to take less of their drugs which had been found to have high purity levels. MDMA, cocaine, and ketamine were among the most common substances found, with Dr David Caldicott stating that one punter (who we can only assume was very disappointed) presented what appeared to be a breath mint.
With potential overdoses avoided and many of the attendees taking less of their drugs at a time, it would surely seem it’s only a matter of time before pill testing becomes more common at festivals around the country. Or, at least, that’s what we’re hoping.
