Jay Watson AKA GUM offers stoic performance in ‘Couldn’t See Pat My Ego’ clip.

Nothing says deep contemplation quite like a man on a hill, gazing out into the vast surroundings as a grainy camera slowly hones in on his brooding face. That’s exactly the introspective mood set in GUM’s latest clip from his fourth album The Underdog, as he straddles hills, beaches and forest clearings in ‘Couldn’t See Past My Ego.’

Shot whilst the psych/electro/pop artist was on tour with POND for Laneway this year, Director Sam Kristofski used 35mm Fuji Film to achieve the vintage aesthetic that adds so much warmth to the 70’s inspired video. With Watson the ponderous subject, wandering around the hills of New Zealand’s picturesque North Island on a blowy summer’s day.

”The concept never really came to us, we started filming because Jay only had a small window and the sun was setting, this is what happened. After we finished shooting we all had a sauna and knew we had filmed something special,” Kristofski says.
