With the new decade comes the dawn of divine tunes and Triple J’s Hottest 100 is delivering us the stairway to euphonic heaven. The start of the twenty-first century saw the nation swooning to Powderfinger’s winning song, ‘My Happiness’. Now, we are ready to welcome another song into the dance of Australia’s greatest summer ritual.
Who will be the artists to wrap up the decade? Before you light up the radio to find out, we’ve asked veterans of triple j’s Hottest 100 to weigh in on not only who they think will win, but also who they want to be crowned this year. They’ve also taken a shot – some more wildly than others – at picking the underdog that might groove above them all. Man, I’d have my money on the new Bond girl Billie Eilish. Her whole sound and mood is by far the best stuff going around and deserves the whole bag but saying that clearly an Australian artist would be epic to win but tunes are tunes and she’s got some eerie bangers that deserve the crown hands down.

Grrrr hmm would probably be Winston Surfshirt. Very tidy. Clearly the lemon would love to get some, but I think we’re gonna be chilling back this year in the countdown having some beers and being naughty listening somewhere.

Surely Tones and I is going to get it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a yearly growth like hers. We saw her play at Spilt Milk at 1pm and it was one of the biggest crowds of the day. Surely, she’s got this. Surely.

I’d like to see Benee get up there. All of her songs are pretty golden, and the kids are frothing. I swear I saw one of her songs going viral on TikTok (not that I know how the hell TikTok works). Stella and her band are a bunch of good kiwi eggs and they deserve it.

I think we could all be in for something pretty unexpected – The Chats could have this in the bag without any of us realising. People predicting this way and that about who’s going to win Triple J’s Hottest 100, head over to Hollywood and be the next big mainstream artist to represent Australia…. it could be The Chats. Beers, tomato sauce and wanks are issues that get talked about more than we think.

You heard it here first. There’s something to be said about the great support female artists are having in this line-up. Tones and I, Mallrat and Billie Eilish are all hot favourites amongst our Triple J Hall of Fame. There were also fat tips on Denzel Curry’s triple j Like a Version of Rage Against the Machine’s ‘Bulls on Parade’. But the votes are in and for now, all we can do is wait for the party to kick off.
In the meantime, there’s nothing like the start of the Australian silly season, so it’s time to crank up the vinyl and get frothy with it. Cheers to all the music set to come in 2020 and beyond.
