Overflowing with talent…

Sit back, kick your feet up and grab your bev of choice (I know it’s only Thursday arvo but roll with me here). With live music all set to make a proper comeback, the excitement is in the air, and it’s bloody intoxicating. It’s beautiful, and the range of music being churned out by local acts is endless; R&B, hip hop, jazz, pop, we could go on forever. The Aussie music scene is exploding with sublime variety and diversity, and we can’t wait for what comes next. We’re back with another five tracks by local artists today, and they’re all stellar AF.

Check it below.

DVNA – ‘More To Give’

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Brisbane ray of sunshine DVNA, it’s that if you lead with love, your art will flourish. She’s the living embodiment of that very prescription, every creation she brings into the world so infused with her honest heart and serenity. She can really do no wrong, and she’s again outdone herself with her latest tune ‘More To Give’, the closing track of her smash EP All My Friends. Inspired by her beautiful family, the tune reflects on the morals instilled in her as she sings about the importance of supporting and uplifting those around her, spreading pure positivity with the light of her spirit. The arrangement is just as kick-ass as the song’s message, taking everything we love from late 90s/ early 2000s R&B and splashing it with layers of melodic bliss and instrumental nirvana. We can’t forget those pristine vocals as well, completely heart-healing and comforting us through whatever struggles we may be enduring. It’s such a promising track and is the perfect way to end the EP, leaving us convinced that she’s one of the chosen ones. One of the few to unite the many.

Boomchild – ‘Tight Jeans’

Sydney funk collective Boomchild embody everything we love about live music, grinding their hearts out as they revel in the fire of groove and creation. They’re a melting pot of artists from across NSW who’ve truly curated their own sound, a sound bursting at the seams with innovative hip hop, R&B and soul. ‘Tight Jeans’ sees the collective get trippy with a badass beat, sounding almost as if Anderson .Paak and Brockhampton started a church of hip hop assassins, murdering instrumentals by the dozen with heavy handed lyricism and intricate wordplay. The tune is bloody beautiful, and has us so excited for the future of Aus hip hop. We’re super keen to see what the young killas do next.

LA WOMEN – ‘Falling In Love’

Auckland indie-pop outfit LA Women throw it back and lose themselves to the fire in ‘Falling in Love’, the tune seeing the trio adopt a distorted guitar and sleazy keys pattern to capture the glory days of 90s pop and R&B. Singer Jake Schdroski’s voice shines perfectly atop that glittery beat, crooning out silky soft rhymes that are cool AF, but heartfelt beyond belief. It listens like we’ve just walked in on a bunch of best mates jamming together in a garage, but they’re so entranced and lost in the groove that they aren’t at all aware of our presence, instead fully focused on their art and how it makes them feel. The tune is alluring, sensual and has a perfect mix of nostalgia and new-age fantasy. Definitely check it out.

Flowerkid – ‘Miss Andry’

Western-Sydney prodigy Flowerkid absorbs all of the hatred and distrust colouring his upbringing and channels it into one of the most touching bops he’s ever produced, baring his heart over a simple piano and steady drums in ‘Miss Andry’. That hook is so damn heartbreaking as well, the youngster properly destroying our hearts with the line ‘Oh, I never hated you/ I don’t even hate them/ I just hate myself’. He sings with a raw vulnerability that’s totally inspiring and unequivocally honest, a dichotomy that has already built him such a tight legion of supporters so early on in his career. It’s pretty hard to believe he’s only 18 years old though tbh, possessing an emotional range and ease of expression far beyond his years. It’s a beautiful listen, you gotta give it a go.

Sycco – ‘Peacemaker’

Another 18-year-old with the brightest of futures, Brisbane songstress Sycco constantly drops deep, introspective bops that whisper to the heart in the sweetest of fashions. ‘Peacemaker’ sees her radiate pure jazz and psychedelia as she entrances us to the strength of her melodic mastery. She gets deep on the tune as she sings about having one’s own back and being in total control of one’s mood, but you wouldn’t be able to tell upon listening, considering how downright catchy and boppy the tune is. It’s seriously so sick when artists sing about deep subject-matter but still make it dancy and uplifting. Yet, Sycco makes it look so ridiculously easy, and you just know this would be one of the most wholesome songs to see live. It’s a killer tune from a youngster with endless potential, do yourself a favour and check it out.
