New Zealand Māori artist TEEKS wraps suave red velvet around you in his stirring soul flicker ‘First Time,’ relaxing your heart all the way down as he slow-dances you into the night. Emanating wickedly luscious vocals that cast spells of an ethereal aura, the Kiwi badass totally engulfs you in a web of jazzy instrumentation, with slow piano rolls and delicate percussion taking you through the highs and lows of vulnerability.
Singing about the rush of emotions in heartbreak and the rollercoaster ride it takes your spirit on, he romanticises those moments of pain and sorrow, finding the beauty in the broken as he affirms the fundamental truth that it’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. Aussie dance-wizard Motez dreams a dream away from the chaos in ‘Give Me Space,’ barricading himself from all distraction as he takes time to orient himself in the new era. Linking up with the soothing vocals of the one and only Kite String Tangle, the veteran-producer weaves a sonic world just perfect for Brisbane-vocalist to delve into, bridging the mountains of techno, house and the golden years of 80s dance; a clear winning formula that transcends convention and expectation.
From the soulful piano chords to the housey claps and staccato synth lines that are injected with a sense of urgency, the curator of all things transcendent creates something truly special with the singer of all things true. An emotion-provoking track that’s luscious, multi-layered and is filled with enough warmth to power your heart for 20 lifetimes, we’re definitely prescribing it for a little meditative self-care. Sydney singer-songwriter Jordy Felix is fierce and uncompromising in her debut single ‘Thinking,’ starting her musical journey on a note of unfiltered transparency and vulnerability. Orchestrated with hazy keys, gentle percussion and riveting vocals that flicker with electric harmonies, the Conservatorium elite takes all worries and submits them to the sonic realm. You’d think she’s been releasing tunes for decades upon first, fifth or thirtieth play of the tune, the sonic gem listening like a soul jam from an artist who’s mastered her craft, one who’s completely in sync with her creative process.
If this is her debut track, then bloody hell, the Aussie music scene better watch out, as she’s obviously not wasting a chord, note or breath, and ‘Thinking’ is proof she has a world of potential just waiting to be explored. Check it below.
Brisbane singer songwriter Haillie fuses the rush of young love with the existential angst caused by that fucker named COVID in ‘Sydney Hates Me’, jamming out a folk-tinged bop that’s equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious. Singing about her troubled efforts to play shows in, you guessed it, Sydney, and consequently missing out on meeting her Sydney crush (if old mate is reading this, get your bloody ass to Brissy after lockdown mate), the tune puts a light-hearted spin on the worry of missing out on love that we can all relate to; but in a super wholesome way that mirrors our anxieties, giving us hope that we’re not alone and that others are going through similar struggles.
The personification of Sydney is genius as well, imbuing the state with all of her sense of loss and making it the overall antagonist of the tune. Storytelling-wise she’s radiating killer Carole King vibes, surrounded by whimsical guitars and steady drums as she really lets the lyricism shine (along with that badass vocal tone). A tune that makes you feel like you’re watching a stellar act jam out a set at your local Sunday market, we’re definitely vibing this one. Check it below.
Sydney rapper Phil Fresh is calling himself and all of us shameless fuckers out with his latest single ‘IG Luv,’ getting real about shooting one’s shot in the DMs (we’ve all done it at some point, let’s be real). Linking up with fellow Sydney-siders Kymie and Kwame, the rhythmic wonder gets super playful in vibe, traipsing back and forth between hip hop and R&B with a colourful beat that perfectly compliments his and Kwame’s own catchy verses. Kymie’s vocals on the hook are straight up heavenly as well, hitting that perfect balance between heartfelt and angelic, along with an overflow of smokiness that works just perfectly with Phil’s and Kwame’s own melodic offerings.
If you’re feeling like some wavy AF hip hop that’ll place a smile on your face, put a bounce in your step and give you a shot of life for your Wednesday morning, we’ve got you covered. Check it below.
