Another one of Sydney’s most esteemed venues bites the dust…

Following reopening in 2017 and being a hub for Sydney’s live music scene for years on end, iconic venue The Lansdowne Hotel has announced it will be shutting its doors. The news comes as the lease for the beloved gig room reaches its expiration date and the live music industry battles another wave of restrictions, prompting the landlords of the venue to close it in favour of building more hostel accomodation.

Having hosted everyone from the likes of international superstar Billie Eilish to local acts like Eagle Eye Jones, Sycco, Milan Ring and countless more, the venue was something of a staple in the Sydney music scene, the low ceilings and intimate stage setup acting as a rite of passage for any young artist on the rise.

Taking to Instagram, the programers behind the esteemed venue were understandably shattered, writing “We are heartbroken to announce that our time with the beloved Lansdowne Hotel is coming to an end. Our lease is due to expire in the coming months, and the Landlords have chosen to close the Gig Room to build more Hostel accommodation. This was not a part of our vision for the Lansdowne, and as such, we have decided to call time on our custodianship of this iconic live music venue.”

In a small bit of good news however, shows will be running at the Lansdowne until the end of April, so if you happen to have a ticket to one of those few gigs, we strongly recommend holding onto them. For now, check out their full statement below, and keep an eye out for what the programmers behind the Lansdowne have coming up at Mary’s Underground and more.
