It’s time to tune in to Oliver Sparks.

Having seemingly dropped out of nowhere a couple of months back, armed with a ridiculously infectious electro banger, Newcastle artist Oliver Sparks has remained something of a mystery. His debut track ‘Dance’ hits that sweet spot where sugary pop melodies meet grooves that you can’t help but move along to – but who the hell is this enigmatic multi-instrumentalist?

Well known within the Newcastle music scene, Sparks (real name Cameron Daniels) has for a long time been regarded as a one of the Steel City’s most talented keyboard/piano players. You’ll often see him joining acts of any genre onstage and effortlessly locking in, whilst also sprinkling some magic of his own into the performances. He’s a musician’s musician, one of those “if you know, you know” players.

But why the transition into pop? How long had he been hatching this plan? Where is the Oliver Sparks project headed? Check out the interview below to get the inside word on this exciting new venture:

You’re known around Newcastle predominantly as an accomplished ivory tickler. Why did you want to step out from behind keys?

It is something I have never done. I have played for many other musicians and bands, however I have never been apart of a solo music project. Musically I wanted something new and exciting, a music project where the writing was all on me – to share the passion I have for something with others is great.

How has the response been from fellow musos? Catch anyone off guard?

The response has been great and supportive. I am sure people closest to me had a feeling the release was going to be pop and I am sure others were expecting 1970’s keyboard rock ’n’ roll. Overall it has all been positive – the people are nice! Thank you!

So far all we’ve heard from you is ‘Dance’. Is the track part of an album/EP? Or is it a standalone single?

Not long after I recorded ‘Dance’ I went back in the studio to record another track. The next single is ready to go and will be released soon. And in a few days time I will be back in the studio working on a new track. As for an album/EP – I can’t say for certain – but new music is coming.

How long have you been waiting to unleash ‘Dance’ and the Oliver Sparks persona?

Roughly twelve months. I have had the whole idea of Oliver Sparks in my head for a while. Half way through last year was when it really came to life. I was able to work with some great people who helped produce and engineer my music. It is nice to finally ‘unleash’ the project.

The tune is undeniably catchy and pop-based, but there’s a strong feeling of longing as well as some deep undertones in there. What were you listening to when you made it?

Lots. Everything. The three artists that stick out from memory are JOY. Petit Biscuit and Maggie Rogers.

Have you performed live as Olive Sparks? Would you enlist a band for this? Or go full solo?

I have not performed live as Oliver Sparks. If it ever happens I hope it is with other people. I have never been a one-man band and do not intend on doing that. Two, three, four people on stage… the more the merrier.

The single artwork is very abstract. How do you feel like it relates to the tune (if it does at all)?

My eldest brother painted the single artwork. If it relates to the tune for other people that’s great. I really like it and thought the track would too.

What does the future hold for Oliver Sparks?

More music and more releases. I am really happy I have the opportunity to work with great people. This music project has allowed me to connect with other artists and I am thankful.
