It’s not too long ago that GG Magree was spinning every weekend on Sydney’s club circuit. With her furious onstage dance moves and preference for dropping Tinashe at every opportunity, it’s easy to see why she became one of the city’s favourite DJs.

Since then, GG has spread her wings and jumped headfirst into production and vocals. Her first official singing effort -‘Frontlines’ with Zed’s Dead and NGHTMRE – is the debut that most artists can only dream of. The song has skyrocketed across the globe and earned 5 million streams since its release last September. Now, GG is about to hit the road with NGHTMRE on his Australian tour, kicking off in Perth tomorrow.

On top of this, GG has also announced the expansion of her Yeah Pussy brand. With a new clothing collection set to drop on February 1, the label has now also announced that it’s branching into a record label and management company. With so much on her plate, we quickly caught up with GG before she hits the road:

Tell us about the latest evolution of Yeah Pussy. What has inspired this change and what would you describe as its objectives?

I wanted people to completely understand why the brand was developed in the first place, and I was sick of being categorised as a ‘girl gang leader.’ Sure, I do it for the ladies but I push just as hard for the boys also. Creativity isn’t a gender thing and I wanted to ensure that people understood that. Yeah Pussy as a network aims to promote creatives, educate those who are scared of stepping outside the box and ultimately a place where males and females can express themselves. I want people to want to be apart of the YP team because we push boundaries. The name is bold and so are the members.

One of the new branches of YP you have outlined is a record label. Have you got any acts under that umbrella yet and who will you be looking to sign?

We have been working with a number of artists internationally which is really exciting! One in the UK, one in Japan and one homebred Aussie. At the moment I am unable to say who, but I’m pretty good at dropping clues on my socials so keep peeping…

Stella and Vanessa Hudgens have been seen sporting the latest YP garments at women’s marches in America recently. How do you think YP aligns with the messages of such protests?

Yeah Pussy was developed to push limits, for people who are not afraid to step out of their comfort zone and lastly for people who are proud to show off and stand up for what they believe in. I feel so, so proud that the girls are repping the brand.

Tell us about the latest YP lookbook/video and some of the people you have featured in it. Why did you choose them and is there anyone else on your wishlist for YP?

In the re-branding, my business partner Yung Lex and I really wanted to show the versatility of the brand. Previously YP was flaunted by hot, bikini type babes – don’t get me wrong, they still are a major Key – however we wanted to point out that males play a just as dominant role in the brand as females… It’s a vibe!

Dakota Gordon recently shot a full crew of homies, from creatives to musicians to rappers to models. I also shot with one of my all time big crushes Phillabu$trr – that boy breaks hearts everywhere! And most recently I also shot a family, with the cutest little girl, two pitbulls, a snake and the Mum and Dad! For the wishlist, I would have to say we are working on some pretty big concepts right now with sponsors, but I’m focusing pretty heavily on getting it on ASAP and Bad Gal RiRi.

Why do you think people have this misconception about it being female exclusive?

The only word that throws people is ‘Pussy’ and I get it! But the whole idea and concept of Yeah Pussy isn’t a sexual term. If people who are scared and uncomfortable by the name actually took the time and took a closer look into what we represent and what we stand for, then they would recognise that its really a creative hub for people to express themselves – so if you don’t like it then you just basic and it ain’t for you.

Congratulations on your debut Zeds Dead & NGHTMRE collaboration ‘Frontlines’ hitting 5 million streams. How does it feel seeing those numbers? Tell us about how it was performing that song live for the first time at HARD last December with Zeds Dead.

Its super surreal, the whole process of working with Zeds and NGHTMRE was mental. They are huge inspirations who have now basically become family to me. They are so supportive its actually mental. Even when I was about to sing live for the first time, Zac (one half of Zeds Dead) looked at me and said “GG you’re the boss, now get your ass up there and break that stage.”

It was the first time I had ever sung live and we didn’t get time to soundcheck or anything, and the fact that they have so much faith in me was mental. All I can say is I am fucking blessed! And there is MORE to come with the boys, stay tuned.

You also have an upcoming tour with NGHTMRE. What can we expect from those shows? Will you be spitting a live freestyle?

Ya girl will be throwing down a lil’ something! The tour’s going to be fire. I really feel sorry for my TM, he doesn’t know what he’s gotten himself into.

What are some of your favourite songs to drop in a DJ set at the moment? Does ‘2 On’ by Tinashe still get the crowd going?

Ya girl Tinashe is always a vibe. She’s sexy, she’s naughty and she creates great hip movement. I’m really fucking with Zomboy at the moment, Stormzy, Giggs, and a little bit of Drizzy. Oh, did I mention ASAP?

What’s on the cards for GG Magree in 2017?

What isn’t on the cards it a better question! Yeah Pussy is about to launch the rebrand, I’m DJing, producing and writing along with touring internationally. On top of that I now have a creative network with my manager, business partner and basically my voice of reason Yung Lex. We spent majority of of last year travelling, hustling and dabbing to lock in all the goodness for this year. So all I can say is “Forgive me for my wrongs… I have just begun.”
