So much mystique.

Avant-electro duo Plastic Face have just dropped one of the coolest clips you’ll see this year… but who are they?

Every now and then an act comes across our desk that makes us stop in our tracks. When ‘2headedhorse’ – the debut track from Plastic Face AKA Pete Stals and Will Coleman – dropped it had that same effect. The more we listened to the three and a half minute sonic collage, the more questions we had: who are these guys? What genre is this? What planet has it come from?

They’ve just dropped their sophomore single ‘Hiivision’ along with a video that plunges us into their ethereal, dark world. Keeping with the music’s twists and turns and turns, the clip feels more like a story from the mind of an unreliable narrator, with the duo transporting an enigmatic figure through a deserted city.

Feeling it? Head here to follow Plastic Face on Instagram and check out below where we try to answer some of our (many many many) questions for this dynamic duo:

First up, what have you got going on underneath the masks?

Underneath the masks lie unattainable/otherworldly good looks. It would be unfair to reveal ourselves to mere mortals. The sheer sight of such beauty and symmetry would turn one’s eyelids inside out. We have also swarn an ancient tibetan oath never to reveal our identities, only the true faceless eagle serpent shall prosper in uncertain times of the naked jaguar man crow.

How long have you two been working on this project? How did it start out?

It took us the better half of a year to finish this project. The two of us have been writing songs together for many, many years. Come the clusterfuck of 2020 and rona keeping us in lockdown , we found ourselves compelled to piece together and polish some of these songs/ideas into shiny little gems and unleash them onto the world.

You guys live in different cities, right? What’s the writing process like?

We do mostly, yes!

The writing process usually involves us sending each other ideas over email. It might be a sample, a field recording, a guitar line, piano line, a beat, a vocal hook or a melody. Any one of those things will spark a vibe or mood and we’ll go from there and see where the river takes it. There’s something magical and child-like in sending something off to each other and waiting with bated breath to receive it back a few days later. This time with another level of flavour, a delicious off-menu secret sauce if you will.

“Have you ever seen a rat trying to fly” is an interesting opening line. Is the song specifically about anything or more abstract?

It’s definitely meant to be more abstract. We wanted it to invoke a feeling and a visual that people could interpret how they please.

The track heads into some euphoric and dark places. Does that reflect your worldview?

The world has always had a duality to it for as long as us humans have existed. We try our best to stay positive but it’s easy to get swept up in the bad shit. I guess it’s interesting to think if the concept of dark/light would exist without each other, I suppose they wouldn’t. Both are important in every sense of the word so we try appreciate the good times when they arrive and bunker down and be ready when the storm approaches. Now that’s some Tony Robbins shit right there! That’ll be $40 for that nugget of wisdom. Stank u smelly much!

It’s hard to define your music or lump it into a genre. What sort of stuff were you listening to when you were writing for this project?

We listen to absolutely everything we can! If it’s good, it’s good you know? We really didn’t want to pigeon hole ourselves into any certain genre for this project. We wanted to have the flexibility and freedom to bring any idea to the table, nothing was off-limits.

Are ‘HiiViSiON’ and ‘2headedhorse’ part of a larger body of work?

Yes! We have an album on the back burner ready to serve piping hot next year. We also plan on releasing another single and video before that happens too.

Tell us about the concept behind the clip, we get that you two are these otherworldly transporters, but what’s the metaphors there? If there are any?

Our amazing friend Sean Clancy Donovan wrote and directed this clip. Early on in the year we were lucky enough to see his debut short film ‘Headless Chooks’ which we were blown away by. We immediately got in contact with him and asked him to be involved in this project. Much like the concept of the song, Sean’s films are pretty stooped in mystery and metaphors that are completely open to personal interpretation. A bit like a choose your own adventure goosebumps book.

Are there any chances we’ll be seeing you live anytime soon?

Abso-bloody-loutely! We’re working hard on trying to come up with something interesting and unique to give to people next year. Expect some mind-bending visuals and lots of 808’s.

What else have you got coming up this year?

A bit of downtime I think at this stage. We are always writing and recording but yeah, This year has been busy and hectic in a great way and Planning for Plastic Face world domination next year, yeeeeee!! xoxo
