In an age where horror movies are straight up terrifying and at times impossible to distinguish from real life, it comes as a huge relief when we can watch a foray into the jumpscare genre without getting scared out of our minds. Thankfully, Northern Beaches band The Rions’ latest music video for ‘Scary Movies’ hits the mark and then some in this regard, and if you’re looking to get a healthy dose of indie at the same time, then you’ve come to the right place.

The latest single from the four-piece is a catchy cut that splices their indie rock origins with their pop sensibilities for a fun-loving groove about finding one’s soulmate. The ‘fun-loving’ aspect of the bop is particularly emphasis through its upbeat guitar lines and soulful vocals (courtesy of frontman Noah Blockley), as the band explain, “An aspect that isn’t touched on enough is how fun falling in love can be and how happy finding your person can make you.”

With an ethos such as this underpinning ‘Scary Movies’, the black and white nature of the visuals (directed by Ben Develin and Alex Given) sure comes as a surprise. Taking inspiration from the German Expressionist period of cinema, the dramatic clip sees the various members of the band take on the role of loveable monsters while giving a carefree rendition of the track. The result is an odd but hilarious cinematic that provides an intriguing contrast to the song’s message about young love, and unsurprisingly, it’s one that continues to grow on you the more times you watch it.

It’s another solid addition to the ever-growing Rions discography, and the best part is that they’re going on tour in May to celebrate it, taking to the likes of Meanjin/Brisbane’s The Brightside, Naarm/Melbourne’s The Evelyn Hotel and Eora/Sydney’s The Lansdowne Hotel.
