New Tame, who dis?

Having teased it out on socials, with his “Been Busy” post a couple of weeks back, Kevin Parker AKA Tame Impala has today given us the first taste of the fruits of his labour, in the form of ‘End Of Summer’. And let’s just say, it’s a bit of a departure.

The seven-minute track is powered by this spacey and unrelenting acid house beat that sounds like pure sugar for your earholes at 3am on a dance floor (or lounge room floor). There’s a synthy motif that recurs and a few upward and downward swells throughout the track, but ultimately it feels like this washed-out collage of pieced-together ideas.

Of course KP’s vocals are unmistakable, as he sings about that stage of acceptance and realising that someone is no longer going to be in your life. If it wasn’t for his distinct voice, you probably wouldn’t guess this is a Tame Impala song – and anyone who says they could identify it without vox are lying.

That said, it has opened up a whole new realm for Kevin that is pretty exciting for us mortals to enter. It’s arguably his most “druggy”-sounding music ever, only the drugs are a little different to the weed-infused Lonerism or the MDMA-laced Currents.

The music video, directed by Julian Klincewicz, is rad. A protest against this vertical consumption place that our phones have led us to, it pairs two screens alongside each other, making everything feel really wide as we gyrate between the two sides of the glitchy coin.

Watch it below and stay tuned for more from Tame Impala – oh and don’t forget to catch Kev supporting Justice in December!
