The guitar that Kurt Cobain played at MTV Unplugged 1993 only five months before his untimely death has sold for a record amount at auction recently. One of the most timeless Nirvana performances of all time, the performance embodies that made the grunge outfit incredible: the harsh detachment, raw lyricism and honest musical intent. It’s sublime in every sense of the word.
A buyer at an auction recently seemed to agree with our assessment, winning the D-18E guitar for a record $6 million USD ($9 million AUD). It was only expected to go for $1 million USD, but we’re guessing the buyer was just as taken with the piece as we are. The guitar also features custom details from Cobain himself, including a Bartolini pickup to the sound hole, as well as a flyer from Poison Idea’s Feel The Darkness album and three baggage claim stubs on the handle.
“This important guitar has earned its rightful place in Rock ‘N’ Roll history as the instrument played by one of rock’s most influential musicians and icons in one of the greatest and most memorable live performances of all time,” the auction house stated in a press release.
Beyond being Cobain’s guitar, the D-18E is also special for the fact that there are only 301 other guitars of its kind out there, with guitar company Martin stating only 302 D-18Es were ever made.
It’s not the first time Cobain’s possessions have gone for crazy amounts however, with his olive green sweater he wore in the 1993 MTV Unplugged set winning a whopping $334,000 USD (approximately $500,000 AUD) at auction.
