If there’s one artist that’s remained ridiculously consistent throughout they years, it’s Queensland sibling duo, Lastlings. Bursting onto the scene in 2015 with their debut single, ‘Verona’, the duo have repeatedly served up soothing hybrid pop and dance creations that strike the sweet spot between getting you in your feels and firing you up with adrenaline. It’s a dichotomy that’s subsequently taken them to the likes of Splendour in the Grass, Spilt Milk and Coachella, and it’s resulted in the creation of their latest single, ‘Noise’.
Penned following the lifting of lockdowns in 2021, the new offering is flush with the feeling of rediscovered freedom, while tinged with a slight sadness as lead singer Amy Dowdle singes lines like “Please don’t let me go/wish you could hold me close/ because now, I’m dancing on my own” as she reflects on a lost love. In accordance with recent singles ‘Holding Me Like Water’ and ‘Get What You Want’, the production for the track is filled with an avant-garde blend of electronic, indie, and pop sensibilities, with simmering synths and intricate drum lines helping to create a mellow soundscape.
It’s a melancholic, but soothing reflection on romantic loss from the sibling duo, which adheres to the song’s message as singer Amy explains, “Noise is about reminiscing on an old relationship. The good memories. Talking late at night. Going to raves together. Dancing. All the arguing and making up. All the… Noise.”
And thankfully, it appears we’re about to get a whole lot more noise from the ‘Take My Hand’ creators, with the new single taken from their newly-announced album, Perfect World, which is slated to land on June 23rd. Accompanying the announcement is a cinematic trailer for the album, which sees the musical pair in various dystopian soundscapes as Amy gives a poetic narration that hints at the thematic landscape of Perfect World.
The duo are clearly on a creative hot streak right now, and just going off singles ‘Holding Me Like Water’, ‘Get What You Want’ and now ‘Noise’, it seems like Perfect World is set to live up to its namesake and then some. For now, be sure to pre-order it here and buy/stream ‘Noise’ here.
