Almost a year to the day after releasing their self-titled studio album, Brisbane’s Ball Park Music are back in the limelight with a sun-safe new offering…

The new bop, titled ‘Sunscreen,’ sees the veteran five-piece embrace the more laid back and carefree parts of their sound, gentle guitar lines and drums underpinned by air harmonies that throw it back to early hits like ‘All I Want Is You’ and ‘It’s Nice To Be Alive.’ It’s got a pretty cool lo-fi aspect to it as well, almost as if a veil of distortion is placed atop to give it a more garage-heavy sort of vibe as frontman Sam Cromack sings about presence and the pitfalls of technological distraction.

The accompanying clip adheres to the visual fingerprint Ball Park’s live shows have made have become renowned for, utilising light-hearted cartoons and animations that collide and cascade like an ’90s reminiscent serial.

Naturally, the visuals are interwoven with the melodies of the song, the harmonies and instrumentation triggering various effects and transitions that burst with life. If you’re a bit on the photosensitive side however, probably avert your eyes from this beauty, the four-minute clip rife with flashing lights and exploding colours.

Speaking on message behind the new single, Sam explains “Songs like this are cool, they work in a mysterious way. Their fragmented lines come from all over your mind to congregate and share some special message that’s been dying to get out. Sometimes it feels fateful even.

This song was like a slap in the face. It said, ‘Hey bozo you’re hopelessly addicted to your phone. Time to put that shit down!’. So, here it is. Sunscreen. Protect yourself out there!”

Guilty as charged. Ball Park Music’s new single ‘Sunscreen’ is out now. Be sun-safe and listen to it above, and be sure to buy/stream it here.
