Philadelphia rapper Lil Uzi Vert has come through with the follow-up to ‘Futsal Shufflle 2020’ and it’s polarising to say the least. On new song ‘That Way’, Uzi draws inspiration from everyones favourite 90s boyband (that’s a sentence I never thought I’d type) the Backstreet Boys as he reimagines the mega smash that defined a generation ‘I Want It That Way’.
Sampling the famous hook, Uzi uses his mastery of autotune to put a new spin on a classic. And we might cop some heat for this, but it kinda slaps. If this wasn’t a take on the Backstreet Boys, we guarantee this would be absolutely blowing up on the sound waves. And although some will say that songs like ‘That Way’ aren’t helping push Hip Hop forward while staying true to its roots, it would be fair to say that Hip Hop wouldn’t be what it is today without taking leaps of faith and trying new sounds that might not sound right at the time.
Regardless, whether ‘That Way’ becomes a hit or not, we gotta respect the man for trying something new and trying to grow as an artist. Big up to you Uzi.
