The young Adelaide emcee has been nominated for a BET Award for ‘Best New International Act’, going up against UK clique Section Boyz, South African spitter Emptee and more. With the BET Awards standing as one of the world’s premier celebrations of hip-hop, this is a massive accolade for Tkay, whose profile simply hasn’t stopped in the past few years.
Her career in Australia has been marked by festival performances like Splendour In The Grass, headline tours, support slots for Mark Ronson and Charli XCX, as well as performances with local pioneers including Hilltop Hoods. All of this has occured before the release of her debut album, which we’re assuming will be arriving sooner rather than later. Still, her collaborations with the likes of What So Not and Baauer have us hooked and ready for the full-length.
You can vote for Tkay right here, while the ceremony will take place on June 26. We’re crossing all of our fingers and toes for Tkay to take one home for Australia! The BET Awards have also just announced a blockbuster tribute to Prince for their 2016 edition, which will see The Roots, D’Angelo and Janelle Monáe perform a ‘special musical celebration’ in honour of the late legend. We’re betting that this will be pretty darn fantastic, so stay tuned for all the action later this month:
