Anyone else up for a new Matt Corby album?

Following a busy year thats seen him produce for the likes of Budjerah, Genesis Owusu, Jack River and more, Matt Corby is finally back with a tasty solo single. Titled ‘Problems’, the new offering from the veteran singer-songwriter/producer sees him fully embrace the R&B influences that underpinned past singles like ‘Knife’s Edge’ and ‘Empire’s Attraction’, slowing things down for a D’Angelo-reminiscent groove about human nature and our proclivity for creating problems we can’t solve.

It’s a lyrical premise nicely balanced by the musical soundscape, with hazy piano lines and guitars complimented by delicate harmonies and a steady drum beat. Corby’s vocals are as dynamic as ever in this cut as well, the famed tenor opting for an easygoing delivery that utilises both his raspy lower voice and airy falsetto with ease.

The sum of the instrumentation results in some especially gripping moments, most notably on the last chorus as various wonky synths are overlaid on top, with Corby treating us to some signature vocal scatting reminiscent of his 2016 album, Telluric. It’s a nice evolution of his sound as a whole, and whether you were a fan of the 2016 record or preferred his sophomore effort, 2018’s Rainbow Valley, we’re guessing you’re gonna vibe this just as hard.

Speaking on the social commentary that permeates the new single, Corby explains, “It’s about how funny humans are creating our own problems and issues that we then have to solve. Or creating problems so difficult we then can’t solve. And how people talk so much shit and don’t do anything – how we’re setting ourselves up for failure. People want to point the finger but nobody wants to carry anything themselves.”

It’s a welcome return for the veteran artist. Matt Corby’s new single ‘Problems’ is out now. You can buy/stream it here.
