The Sydney based songstress has captivated audiences with her spooky aesthetics and entrancing sound. A self-professed lover of old school horror flicks and the occult, Fable has always had a penchant for infusing the darker walks of life into sleek pop melodies. Lady Lucifer’s musical prowess has taken her worldwide, from Japan’s buzzing stages to the glitz of Las Vegas. In the last few years, she has set her pearly gaze upon the Australian music scene. Fable is coming for the ears of Aussie music punters like it’s the last thing she does, wielding her hybrid brand of pop like a dagger.
Fable has started 2021 with a bone-rattling bang, with her latest single ‘Jennifer’s Body’. The tune sets bubblegum pop harmonies against rattling high hats and thumping synths. In just under four minutes, the diva of death packs enough thrill, camp and energy to make John Waters blush. Long after the song has ended, the irresistibly catchy anthem will haunt your waking mind, urging you to convert your bedroom into a neon-lit club – an all-black dress code is mandatory, of course!
We caught up with Fable to talk about her beginnings, musician inspirations and ‘Jennifer’s body’!
Hi Clara, congratulations on the release of ‘Jennifer’s Body’! How does it feel for it to finally be out?
Hey Andy! Thankyou so much! It feels so so good. I’ve had this one in the crypt for quite a while and found that 2021 was the perfect time to bring it to life! (or death..hehe)
In your early days, you worked abroad performing in all types of settings . From Universal Studios in Osaka to Las Vegas as a part of the Bad Wolves/Five Finger Death Punch Tour. How did those experiences shape your relationship with being on stage?
It was intense! Working for Universal taught me to have a hardcore stamina. I was performing five shows a day, five times a week for a year straight, and it trained me to sing and dance at the same time, which is much harder than it looks! I’m super grateful for the friendships I made with the ragtag team of other dancers from all over the world, and I got to experience so many cultures in the one place.
The shifting lineups also helped my improvisational skills, not to mention broadening my vocals.
Who are some of your biggest musical heroes? How did they influence your pursuit of pop music?
My biggest musical heroes are the Kings and Queens of Pop! I am of course referring to Madonna and Michael Jackson, also Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Melanie Martinez and Dorian Electra.
I also LOVE Tim Curry, especially as Frank N Furter in Rocky Horror Picture Show. That character inspires my theatrics and live performances to this day.
The music video for ‘Jennifer’s Body’ bleeds together a plethora of horror iconography into a neon lit dreamscape. What was the process like bringing visuals of ‘Jennifer’s Body’ to life?
I worked with director Felicity Jayn Heath on creating a very particular vision of campy horror that combined inspiration from The Exorcist, Thriller, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Jennifer’s Body.
It was a gruelling twelve hour hour shoot that included a lot of body paint, dancers, strobes and of course a lot of smoke. I wanted a music video that would work with my spooky yet pop style of music and I’m so happy with it!
What is it about the imagery and allure of the macabre that resonates with you?
I love horror’s ability to evoke a reaction in people. It can be scary, it can be theatric, it can be beautiful, but I also love how campy it can be. It’s the kind of reaction I want out of people when they hear my music.
As a self professed horror film lover, what are a few titles you would recommend to set someone down the path of spooky cinema?
Oh so many! Oculus is my favourite, which is about a haunted mirror. Cabin In the Woods by Joss Whedon, and I love Carrie – I try to use fake blood in everything I do!
What are the rest of your plans for 2021?
I want to release an EP and a short film to accompany it. I’m also planning my live show for when *fingers crossed* tours can start again!
