Ngaiire first came into my awareness with a pair of stunning vocal features on The Tongue’s 2013 album Surrender To Victory just a few months before she released her own debut body of work Lamentations. It felt like Ngaiire was absolutely everywhere for the next 12 months, earning a reputation for one of the best live shows in the game. Six years later and we’ve been blessed with just one other (albeit another highly acclaimed) project to date, her 2016 sophomore album Blastoma. But that may all be about to change.
Returning today in fine form, Ngaiire delves into light, dark, life, death and the unknown on ‘Shiver’. Prior to its release, the track was shortlisted for the prestigious Vanda and Young Global Songwriting Competition and it comes with all the elegant subtleties we’ve come to expect from the Sydney-based singer-songwriter. Rich in colour and texture throughout, there’s a juxtaposition in the way that her voice warmly draws you in before it’s hauntingly layered and looped. Whether this makes you want to get up and dance or listen to the song on repeat while staring out a window into the rain despairingly, Ngaiire paints emotion and uncertainty in a way that’s really really real.
The future-soul artist has a pair of sold out shows in Sydney and Melbourne to look forward to as well as recently adding a second Melbourne date. Blink and you’ll miss those tickets though so cop yours via the link. Here’s hoping that ‘Shiver’ is a taste of what’s to follow, have a listen below:
