Nice Biscuit soak us in riff-heavy psych with their latest offering.

Having had the pleasure of Brisbane quintet Nice Biscuit’s new single ‘Rain’ a rinsing over the past few days, we can confirm one thing about the track: it’s unrelenting. For about seven minutes the song continually builds, with the real trigger finally pulled in the massive outro as vocals collide and the sonics whirr into a beautiful, spacey wall. This is exactly what you and I want from psych music isn’t it?

The lyrical content of the track, which is built around a clever little guitar lick, is completely relatable too. Here, the band lament the current climate crisis which sees the world plagued by unprecedented fires and floods. Don’t be fooled by the ethereal vocals – there’s a heavy sense of impending doom simmering under the surface of this tune.

“We felt trapped in this feeling of helplessness,” the band says. “The song then became a reflection of the psychological impacts of climate change, where you are at first wishing for rain and then begging for it to stop. We changed the lyrics to reflect this, alternating between ‘stop the rain’ and ‘please don’t stop the rain’.”

The visuals for ‘Rain’ were directed by Joshua Tate and follow the band as they conduct tests, gather samples, and occasionally run in random directions. Grainy, superbly edited, and just the right amount of weird, it’s a fitting accompaniment to the track, elevating and accentuating in all the right spots.
