It seems like millennials are discovering grunge.

You know that guy with blonde hair, ripped jeans and a scraggly beard that you always see on nostalgic IG channels? I’ve just googled him, and it turns out his name is Kurt Cobain, and he played in a band called Nirvana. And not only that, he also wrote that song that’s in The Batman. I think it’s called ‘Something In The Way’.

That’s how my cynical brain imagines millennials and fans of Matt Reeves’ The Batman are finding out about Nirvana’s gloomy ballad, which has seen a massive 1,200% increase in streams since the film’s release. The wave of new listeners has pushed the song, which is taken from the group’s iconic… ahem… second-best… album Nevermind.

Featuring in the trailer, as well as a pivotal moment in the film, the track acted as something of a key into Paul Dano’s Riddler. “Well, in the script Matt had actually mentioned ‘Something In The Way’ by Nirvana,” Dano told NME. “So that right there, that song, those words, that refrain, became hugely important to me. Nirvana became a part of that [character].”

Let’s not be that cynical old guy who wrote the first few lines of this article, and let’s hope that this has opened up Nirvana to a whole new generation of fans. Speaking of Nirvana members, Foo Fighters have just announced some big Australian shows. Read more about it here:
