The iconic Brooklyn rapper is set to join Grandmaster Flash and The Furious 5, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, N.W.A and Tupac Shakur in the Hall of Fame’s growing hip-hop constituent. Rolling Stone broke the news overnight as Biggie’s contribution to music is recognised alongside fellow 2020 inductees Whitney Houston, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, T. Rex, and the Doobie Brothers.
Sadly killed in his prime, Notorious B.I.G. is widely regarded as one of the most influential rap artists of all time. It may come as a surprise then that he’s not already a hall of famer, but artists are only eligible 25 years after the release of their debut album. Ready To Die dropped in 1994.
If Rock and Roll Hall of Fame traditions hold, Biggie will be honoured with a tribute performance at the ceremony which potentially means another Bad Boy reunion or a live rendition of P Diddy and Faith Evans’ number one, ‘I’ll Be Missing You’. Biggie – and the rest of the class of 2020 – will officially join the Hall of Fame on May 2.
