“If you know how to bake a good cake, why change up the recipe?” That’s a saying that gets thrown around when talking about bands like AC/DC who have never felt the need to evolve musically or express themselves in a different way… Hey, each to their own. But for Brisbane-based artist BEKS (and us) eating the same cake every day can get a little stale, which is why she made the switch from punk to pop, leaving her band Rackett behind and taking the brave step into glossy production and dance routines.
So far, it’s a move that’s paid massive dividends with the pop scene embracing her bubbly electronic-infused tunes like ‘Crush’ and ‘Stars In My Eyes’, and more recently her infectious new banger ‘The Thing About Us’. Racking up hundreds of thousands of streams already, it’s clear that there’s no stopping this fiercely independent creative powerhouse.

We caught up with Beks to snap her with her JBL GO 3 and also get a taste of the kinds of tunes that have inspired her new direction. “My playlist is all upbeat, fun dance music that inspires me, music that gets me moving,” she says. “It includes all of my favourite artists like Charlie XCX, Ashnikko and one of my favourite discoveries from 2020, Alice Longyu Gao. Then we’ve got some local Australian artists: Air Sports, Mallrat, Cub Sport and Clara Fable. And, of course, me!”
Dive into her playlist below and head here to pick out a JBL GO 3 speaker of your own to pump it on:
