In case you haven’t noticed, we’ve been admirers of Northern Beaches crooner Charlie Gradon for a long time now. His 2018 debut EP Self Doubt is a (double) rainbow of emotions that swoons between euphoric ballads and indie-rock gems, and you can feel Charlie putting it all out there vocally and lyrically with a level of fearlessness that makes you wonder how “self-doubt” is even part of his vocabulary.
Naturally, we’re super excited to be bringing you ‘Grieving’, the first track from his forthcoming sophomore EP, and once again he’s hit us right in the guts with an absolute corker. Grounded with acoustic guitar, the track builds steadily before allowing the vocals to soar in the choruses. Energy-wise, there aren’t any dips or low points, which is probably one of the perks of understanding songwriting from his multi-instrumentalist perspective.
Lyrically, the track is contemplative and introspective, giving the tune a deeply cathartic feeling whilst also inviting us to take stock of the world around us. “The final pre-chorus relates to a weird feeling of relief, of leaving and ‘walking home in bare feet’ not concerned with the future, but being hyper aware of a beautiful end to a heavy week.”
Charlie Gradon and his band (who are bloody excellent BTW) will be launching ‘Grieving’ in April, playing The Vanguard and the Grace Darling in April – dates below, tickets here.
