For fans of singer-songwriter Demi Mitchell, her debut video and album is long overdue. The blending of her smokey voice with jangly guitars and dark lyricism provokes a reel of strong imagery, like a vengeful femme-fatale in a smoke-filled New Orleans bar or a noirish detective novel, or a violent scene in a Tarantino film and so on – you get the vibe.
‘Medicine Woman,’ which is the first single of her soon-to-be-released debut LP The Overflow, captures all that we’ve come to love about Demi as she sways effortlessly in between soaring, harmony-filled verses and a hooky blues turnaround, whilst delivering a certain see-sawing indecisiveness in the lyrics.
“‘Medicine Woman’ is about how making yourself vulnerable to someone can be both an empowering and daunting experience – and finding a the balance between the two. How sometimes, the closer you get to someone, the more you want to run in fear of them discovering your shortcomings,” Demi says.

The video, which was directed by David Fulham and shot entirely on super 8 film, sees Demi wandering around what could be mistaken for a European coastline (but is actually Newcastle), in a homage to the French New Wave cinema of the 50’s and 60’s, capturing the sentiments of intrigue and mystery in a way the is befitting of the song and the artist.
