Entrench yourself in blades of grass and hope, and face a furrowed brow toward the sky. Feel the sun’s warmth make the inevitable journey down upon your skin, flooding your pores with an invigorating aura that energises and revives. Feel it all, be it all, or, if you’re feeling a bit lazy like us, you could just chuck on Gold Coast sweetheart EUCA’s new slow-burn ‘Spite’ (out tomorrow) for a dose of revitalising bliss; an injection of sunshine-infused (you guessed it) spite.
Listening like a spring awakening caught in a bottle, the tune sees the Goldy songbird dial back the bombastic roars and pounds of past tunes like ‘Not Champagne’ and ‘I Hate The Way,’ opting for a acoustic slow-build that gorgeously layers and unfurls, unfurls and layers. Beginning with a gentle guitar and powerful vocals that stand resolute, the seasoned muso sets the stage nice and early, spreading hurtling waves of intimacy; the type that make you feel like she’s only singing to you and you alone. Musically the tune listens as if every guitar and vocal line is imbued with fresh flora and greenery, the steady drums and gentle chords forming a sonic bed of grass for the listener; one filled with intricate instrumentation that sounds simple upon first glance, but is as multi-textured and varied as the tune’s thematic energy.
Naturally, EUCA’s vocals make their way to us like lush sun rays, bolstered by thrilling webs of lyrical vulnerability in lines like ‘That I can’t help but lying/ I guess, who am I harming?’ which just hit you right in the fucking gut man. Before you know it they’re bringing all your own personal shit bubbling to the surface, almost like the froth on a Stone & Wood Pale Ale hurtling over a schooner. But as if reading your mind and sensing your impending existential crisis, she blooms into that feel-good verse, playing with phrasing and pitch in the hook ‘I do it all in spite’ as she manifests her own musical wind beneath her sails.
But make no mistake, this isn’t a tune that’s all sunshine and rainbows, but it’s jam-packed with grit; the songwriter extraordinaire baring her soul about her burning desire to transcend circumstance and the bitter energies that fuel it. And it’s deliciously entrancing.
Speaking on the tune, EUCA confesses ‘Admittedly, I have a naturally spiteful attitude and I function best remembering that ‘success is the best revenge’. It’s not my most charming quality, it is a powerful one. I get fired up proving myself to shitty people, so I work harder, and later I get to rub it in their face,’ while adding that “SPITE is my childish call out to anyone who has hurt me. I’m letting them know I’m not done yet, I’m still working and I know they can’t help but listen.”
Looks like us and her haters have something in common; we literally can’t drag our ears away from her, her ethereal strums and picture-painting vocals reaching through the sonics and wishing us back down into her orbit. It’s a track that’ll lift your spirits and take the weight from your sorrows on your darkest days.
Thus, if you’re ever feeling lost, uncertain or just totally fucking pissed at some asshole who’s done you wrong, we’re seriously prescribing ‘Spite’ for an earthy return to peace, motivation and most importantly, an endless stream of ice cold Stone & Wood Pale Ales (with the EXACT right amount of foam). But refreshing beverages aside, be sure to check ‘Spite’ out, and while you’re at it, make sure to keep up with EUCA on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date on all of her latest enchantments.
