Following a busy 2021 that saw her release two singles to critical acclaim, Sydney-based muso Jordan Laser is back with one of her most captivating creations yet…

The new single, titled ‘Under The Wheel’ (which we’re stoked to be premiering today), sees the Sydney singer-songwriter double down on the emotive breadcrumbs she lay down in last year’s ‘Slow Motion’ and ‘100 Days of Solitude,’ however with a slightly more upbeat aura that helps the tune double as both a ballad and firestarter.

Sonically the track is rich with elements of indie-rock and dream-pop, wavy guitar lines and various bits of ornamentation setting a rich backing for Jordan’s ethereal vocals. Her tone really shines on this cut as well, the juxtaposing of lines like “I’m moving and changing” atop the breakbeat drums adding a sense of urgency to the ballad that excites and invigorates.

The lyric video for the new tune mirrors the ethereality of the sonics, the clip following the starlet as she ventures through a nighttime Sydney, taking various twists and turns as she loses herself to the never-ending nature of the cityscape. There’s a real emphasis on the energy of Sydney in the clip as well, the skyline and it’s luminescent lights acting as a character itself that’s constantly guiding Jordan throughout the video’s four-minute runtime.

Speaking on the meaning behind the new single, Jordan explains, “I wrote ‘Under The Wheel’ at the end of 2018 after a really gross breakup, not realising until the end of the relationship that I’d been caught in a narcissists web. I guess this song is me untangling myself from that web, swinging between feelings of desperation and liberation, and ultimately making my way into a new life.”

Definitely a worthy follow up to ‘100 Days of Solitude’ and ‘Slow Motion’ that not only does justice to the city of Sydney, but that to the growth that results from new beginnings.
