With their debut EP When You Get Home dropping tomorrow, Sydney indie outfit The Sunday Estate are today sharing another slice of melancholy pop for your swooning pleasure ahead of the release. Following a trio of singles released this year, ‘We Were Kids’ is a shimmering ode to youth, sprinkled over driving drums and optimistic synth lines. In short, it’s a fucking hit.
A nod to the immersive story-telling of Mirror Music family Gang of Youths and Charlie Collins, the lyrics neatly personify the anticipation and uncertainty of young manhood. Here, vocalist Conor O’Reilly keeps things fittingly vague, which nicely suits the reflective bones of the track. “[It’s] another song about the trials of getting older. I wanted to really lean into those bittersweet feelings that come with past love/friendship,” he says.
And what do you do when you’re young, carefree and in a Sydney band? You walk around Central smoking darts and breaking hearts, of course. This is pretty much what goes down in the video as we follow the guys hitting some of their favourite haunts in the state’s capital. We’ve gotta say, with the city currently in lockdown, it looks like a whole heap of fun…

Head here to pre-save When You Get Home and stay tuned for more from these lads. We have an unshakeable feeling that they’re gonna be big movers in the Aus scene very soon (provided they cut back on the durries)!
