Having just released the polarising lead single ‘Frankie Sinatra‘ last week with Detroit emcee Danny Brown and the ever elusive MF Doom, we expect that The Avalanches hype will be building relentlessly until the album release next month – but it just might peak with their performance at Splendour In The Grass.
Joining the likes of At The Drive-In, The Cure, The Strokes and more, the announcement of The Avalanches was the huge surprise that Triple J left for last when they dropped the SITG line-up – a testament to their everlasting influence and legendary status. Now, footage from The Avalanches’ first gig in 15 years has emerged online, where they performed at Primavera Sound in Spain, giving us a taste of what’s to come in Byron Bay this July.
With Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi controlling the decks, the crowd was treated to classics like ‘Frontier Psychiatrist’ and new singles like the aforementioned ‘Frankie Sinatra’, as well as tunes from Jamie XX, David Bowie and curiously enough, ‘The Macarena’. We’re not sure what The Avalanches’ live plans are for Splendour, but here’s an inkling as to the vibe they can create after such a lengthy hiatus. Watch some fan-shot footage below and prepare for a sizeable party at Splendour In The Grass:
