Sitting back with a beer in hand, watching the waves roll in, maybe a bit of fishing… No, we’re not talking about every dad’s dream holiday, we’re talking about Beddy Ray’s latest video for their beer-soaked anthem ‘Soberoaster’. It dropped last month and features the Queensland four-piece doing all those activities whilst simultaneously belting out the track.
Melodically addictive with plenty of moshable moments, the tune is their third single following their 2017 EP Lost Found Beat Around and captures that reckless innocence of early-20s life. If only we could all “spend our lifetime drinking beers in the sunshine”, wouldn’t the world be a better place? You bet it would be.

After hearing this belter, which straddles the pop-punk/indie-rock world, we thought we’d reach out and find out what music inspires the band. So here are frontman Jackson Van Issum’s favourite albums. No arguments. Check it:
This album has to be up there as one of my favourites. This was the reason I picked up a guitar. The heavy sound with pop-like melodies is what kicked off my love for punk music. The album focuses around teenage life of being bored, getting stoned, not having a job and all the social anxieties that come along with it. We all find ourselves coming back to this album time and time again as it brings back so many good memories.

I have a memory as a child listening to Americana at my cousin’s house. They were all much older than me and used to have a laugh when I’d sing the words wrong. I remember seeing the album art of the little girl on the swing with a cockroach and thinking how weird it was. That artwork caused this album to get stuck in my brain as one of my first memories of music. I love The Offspring because they have that classic punk style but they can also supplement humour into their songs which made them more memorable. I still love and listen to this album today.

This has to be my favourite Chilli Peppers album! That’s a big call but it holds the most memories for me. Their guitarist John Frusciante had just re-joined the band also bringing a new sound to the peppers that was refreshing and not so in your face. With a more melodic and softer approach it was still packed with hits, ‘Otherside’, ‘Scar Tissue’ and album title ‘Californication’ were all stuck in my head as a child, but one song that sticks out the most is the final track on the album ‘Road Trippin’ I remember cruising up the beach as a child in our old family Hilux singing that song with my old man.

This album is one of my favourite Aussie debut albums. I was in primary school when all you could hear on the radio was ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’. My old man bought the cd and we’d listen to it on repeat on car rides. I came to love every song on the album. Half the songs have a classic rock and roll sound and half are slow ballads spread out evenly to take you on a wholesome journey from start to finish. The brother Nic and Chris Cester have a knack for good songwriting and their harmonies are beautiful.

Whenever I think of this album I think of going to our bassist Brad’s house after school to play these songs over and over. That was about the same time we started getting into recording. We were too embarrassed to record our own songs so we’d find drum tracks of Blink songs and re-record guitars, bass and vocals just for the hell of it. This album was a big change for Blink. They had more time to try different ideas. Rather than finding one drum, guitar and bass sound for the whole album, every song had its own unique sound and feel to it.
