Over the long weekend, news broke that Justin Hemmes was planning to knock down Sydney venue ivy and replace it with a 55-level hotel.

No matter what you think of ivy and its sometimes pompous crowd, you can’t deny the impact it’s had on Sydney nightlife since 2004 – hosting everyone from Mark Ronson to Eric Prydz to Kaytranada, and throwing ever-popular events from Ministry of Sound to Marco Polo. Therefore, many punters were sad to see ivy go, but new information says that we shouldn’t panic just yet.

A spokesperson from the Ivy has spoken to Inthemix, stating that there are “no immediate plans’ for the mega-club to cease trading in Sydney CBD, and that while a hotel might be replacing it eventually, they’re still “exploring ideas” as to what the location will look like in the future.

“A number of options being considered including a new hotel hospitality and lifestyle complex. However, if the project proceeds, it is still many years away and discussions to date have only been preliminary. No final plans have been decided nor time-lines set, and there are certainly no immediate plans to commence redevelopment of the site,”  spokesperson told InTheMix.

“ivy continues to operate ‘business as usual’ and we look forward to welcoming guests for years to come,” the spokesperson continued.

Hemmes previously stated that he only planned to hold ivy for a decade, but its consistent popularity means that it still continues to pack crowds in each and every week. “I always intended [ivy] to be a holding development site. It is just a fantastic site,” he said. “That was the reason I kept ivy as a low-rise development… so it could be knocked down eventually.”

No matter what’s in Hemmes’ master plan, you can spend more than a few more weekends down at ivy. Now’s the time to drink a mojito, get shirtless and do backstroke in the pool.
