It’s the beloved Melbourne hip-hop duo’s second release of 2019 and their first ever foray into the hip-hop ballad realm and, true to form, Remi rides Sensible J’s cruisy production with ease. With a bit of extra flavour courtesy of keys from Hiatus Kaiyote’s Simon Mavin and sweet vocals from Lori, it’s a slow-burner that arrives just in time for REMI’s November tour.
On the inspiration for the song REMI said, “Mad dudes often write songs about women for dudes; I’ve always found that weird as fuck. It also means a lot of love songs don’t mirror my experience. I wanted to write a song for my girl. I wanted to create a song that takes you out of the real world and into that fantasy bubble, reminiscent of a high with no comedown. New love.”
“Sensible J suggested we make ‘Brain’ a rap duet. So, we got Lori. I feel super blessed to know Lori and call her my sister. In the studio, she knows what you’re thinking before you even ask. Clearly her voice is ridiculous but her use of tone, harmony and all-round ability to insert herself into a track is second to none. She came through. Spit the verse. Laid the hook. Blew us away.”
Ahead of dropping their new tune this week, REMI had been drip-feeding a ‘7 Days of Love Making Through Song’ playlist (first instalment here – work your way forwards for optimal experience), setting the mood perfectly for ‘Brain’.
