Despite cementing itself as a growing haven for dance and rock in recent years, the sunshine state of Queensland has been quickly but quickly amassing a wealth of local hip hop artists, with MCs like Nerve, iiiConic and Camouflage Rose. Now, 17 year old rapper AMAR. is the latest to emerge from the state, releasing his latest single ‘GRADUATE’ out into the world.
Penned about his using music as a way to escape from trouble, the track utilises a wealth of momentous horns and synths as a backdrop for AMAR.’s hard-hitting vocals. The lyrics are especially explosive in this cut, particularly on the line, “City heavy but I keep it on my back” as he makes a point of repping his hometown of Brisbane. It’s not hard to see the inspiration from artists like XXXTENTACION, Don Toliver, Travis Scott, and Drake on the record, with the mesh of trap and alternative hip hop shining through with ease.
The accompanying music video sees the young MC backed by a crew that literally jumps off the screen as they take turns performing the new track together, all the while engaging in dance battles and hyping each other up in the process. It’s a welcome visual embodiment of the new heater, and gives an insight into what to expect from the young artist on the rise. Check it out in full below.
