Never thought I’d say this sentence… but… we’ve been lapping up Sophisticated Dingo droppings all year (eww). The Melbourne duo’s track record of delivering up-tempo indie goodness that’s perfect for those raise your-beer-to-the-roof moments is close to impeccable, and the latest Dingo gold nugget (ewww again) is a another gritty jam to add to their swelling catalog.
‘Been Thinking’, which comes off the back of some extremely buzzy Bigsound performances, is happy mess of driving guitars, big vocals and pounding drums. Lyrically the tune is about they way we often bury our true feelings and their inevitable rise to the surface.
“It is commonplace to fake a smile in disguise of the stress and anguish you are feeling,” says vocalist and guitarist Lewis Matte. “This decoy might avoid detection momentarily, but is weakly maintained at best. Even the smallest of inconveniences can trigger all of your screws to come loose. Despite best intentions, your true colours shine bright, and for the better. The real you is out in the open. You can connect with the chaos of the real world rather than hide away in your fantasy of control and calm.”
It feels like we’ll be hearing a lot more from Sophisticated Dingo over the rest of the year, with the duo proving to be favourites on the triply j airwaves; their hit single “Radio On”, held a top 50 spot on triple j’s most played list for two months after being added to full rotation.
