Almost a month out from the release of their second album Here Comes Everybody, Fremantle band Spacey Jane have today released another single while announcing a national tour…

Titled ‘Hardlight’, the new offering from the Hot 100 runner ups sees them up the energy from recent singles ‘It’s Been a Long Day’ and ‘Sitting Up’, opting for a up-tempo guitar-driven cut that strikes a nice balance between ballad and firestarter. And in a nice addition, the Spacey’s take the time to experiment with their signature sound, adding various heavy rock inflections throughout the verses and instrumental sections.

The video for the new cut sees the Spacey’s on a party boat on the Yarra River, playing it out in its entirety as they harken back to past performance-based videos of their such as ‘Good For You’ and the more recent ‘Sitting Up’. Cinematically, however, it definitely goes a step beyond their usual videos, fluid camera tracking following the various individual band members as you’re transported to the front row of their Yarra River mini concert.

Speaking on the unexpected inspiration behind the new offering, frontman Caleb Harper explains, “I wrote this song about how I was feeling like my life was a bit like one of those nightmares where you’re at school with no pants.  Except I used the metaphor of being on set and forgetting all of your lines (because it felt less silly).  I guess it’s about anxiety but also just having no idea what I’m doing even though I want it to look like I really do.”

Along with the new single, the Fremantle four-piece have today announced a national tour for this August, where they’ll take to the likes of Sydney’s Big Top in Luna Park, Brissy’s Fortitude Music Hall, Melbourne’s The Forum and Perth’s Rac Arena for a slew of all ages and O18s shows, with I Know Leopard and Teenage Dads on supports.

The Hot 100 runner ups continue to go from strength to strength, and ‘Hardlight’ is more than enough to tide us over until the release of Here Comes Everybody next month. You can buy/stream it here. You can also cop tickets to Spacey Jane’s upcoming shows here. For now, check out the full list of dates for their national tour below.
