We caught up with indie-rocker Spike Vincent for the fourth instalment of Rekorderlig Sauna Sounds.

For those who are familiar with Spike Vincent’s work, they’ll know his sound is an interesting one to define. His melodies are often sugary, whilst his slacker vibe has a shoegazey depth and darkness, resulting in a sound that is both underground and pop at the same time. It’s the reason why so many artists and punters around Sydney have been singing his praises of late.

He’s recently moved from Sydney’s Inner-West, to the coastal town of Austinmer, which has further spruiked his creative juices. “I was playing a few gigs down there and got to know the people, and it’s just a beautiful place,” Spike says shortly after his Rekorderlig Sauna Sounds performance. “Between the mountain and the beach you’ve got everything you sort of need from nature, in a walkable distance. It’s like a little haven for chilling out, basically. But everyone down there is an artist, like a painter or a musician.”

Spike’s music has travelled much further, however, with his debut self-titled EP being released on indie label Burger Records in the US. “There’ve always been people in the states hitting me up on socials and stuff like that,” Spike says. “Last time I talked to the Burger Record guys, we were thinking about putting out a vinyl next, in album format. That’s sort of what we’ve been working towards and focussing on at the moment. And trying out new stuff. New genres and getting a bit more hectic with the sound, less poppy, more hardcore even.”

As you can see from his Rekorderlig Sauna Sounds performance of ‘I Like You’ below, Spike is more than comfortable getting down in the sauna. Reflecting on the experience reminded him of his time in Japan. “I was in a sauna there, naked, with a bunch of Japanese dudes watching the news. Sweatin’ it out. So I’ve been in saunas,” he says. “It’s a very intimate space and when [bassist] Sammy and I did the video together we were all squished in there, but it was cool. It sounded good.”
