Splendour have announced that they will cease the use of plastic straws at all bars at this year’s event, while also phasing out plastic water bottles over the next three years. They have also lifted their ban on stainless steel water bottles, while encouraging punters to bring their own reusable water bottles to fill up.
It’s all part of the Plastic Free July campaign run by the Green Music Australia organisation, who aim to stop single use plastics at music events. “If we’re going to get polluting plastics out of the music scene – and we all know we have to – big youth festivals have to step up and take leadership,” Tim Hollo of GMA says. “It’s fantastic to see Splendour taking these important steps down that road, and we look forward to continuing to work with them as we make a plastic free music scene a reality.”
