The Byron festival is just a week out from its long-awaited return…

Just when you thought last minute cancellations, restrictions and rule changes were a thing of the past as we entered post-COVID living here in Australia, the NSW police have thrown a total wrench into this year’s Splendour in the Grass just a week out from the event, mandating that minors now be accompanied by an adult at all times while at the festival.

The rule in question had only previously applied to those under the age of 16 and had long been abided by, with the festival having “no history at all of underage alcohol consumption being a concern for police”, as stated by Co-CEO of Secret Sounds Jessica Ducrou. Now, hundreds of minors under the age of 18 have been forced to list their tickets on the official Splendour resale site.

It seems this new rule won’t only apply to Splendour but will be instituted state-wide, as according to the NSW police, who are currently directing enquires as to the decision to the Independent Liquor and Gaming Association (ILGA). Releasing a statement on the matter, the ILGA have explained that the condition was imposed “to address the specific safety risks for a festival of this size and type, with a patron capacity of around 50,000 and bars and other outlets selling alcohol spread throughout the festival’s grounds”.

Understandably, Splendour are now considering legal action and are calling on political leaders to question the new rule, with Ducrou adding “I can’t believe there isn’t more support politically to make sure that there’s some sensible, logical and decision-making around each individual event. We’ve just come out of such a hard, difficult challenging few years.

“After the last three years, our industry needs all the help it can in engaging and letting everyone experience live music”.
