Renowned DJ and NFT magnate Steve Aoki is set to make history with his next cross country (or cross atmosphere) trip, with the ‘Burrow’ producer set to be on the first civilian flight to the moon. The mission, which is part of the dearMoon Project, will take place over a week next year, with a crew of eight venturing to space on board one of Elon Musk’s SpaceX rockets.
Surprisingly, the controversial Musk isn’t actually involved in the mission, rather, the project was created and financed by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, who bought all the seats in the rocket in 2018 in order to “as many talented individuals as possible”.
Video footage of the moment Aoki found out he was heading to the moon as surfaced, with the 45-year-old saying in response, “Since I was a little child I was dreaming of going to the Moon. It’s becoming more and more real every day,” Aoki said in response to the news. “Still hard to believe but very excited and grateful for this amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. To the Moon!”
Joining him is a series of high profile individuals, with K-pop star T.O.P., filmmaker Brendan Hall, YouTuber Tim Dodd, photographers Karim Illiya & Rhiannon Adam, actor Dev Joshi and artist Yemi AD all joining Aoki on the interstellar mission. Here’s hoping they all make it back in one piece, similarly to SpaceX’s all-civilian space crew last year. Check out their iconic return below, along with the moment of Aoki finding out he’s about to make history above.
