This lineup is looking powerful.

If you’ve been following Tasman Keith’s career, you’ll know that raising up voices of First Nations people and music are intrinsically connected for him. The Gumbaynggirr rapper from Bowraville has found a way to weave his story and experiences into anthemic bangers that resonate far beyond the studio, reaching people of all walks of life around the country – even if they don’t know it.

Following the release of ’70 Somethin”, his ghostly exploration into the men and stories that have shaped him, and his instantly iconic interpretation of ‘Bombs Over Baghdad’ for Like A Version, he’s once again using his platform to champion the causes that mean the most to him.

‘Freedom Before Peace’ is a fundraiser for the Dhadjowa Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that provides culturally appropriate, family-led support to the families of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have died in custody.

“I felt that after my LAV and releasing ’70 Somethin” it was important to put this fundraiser on. Artistically it aligned and felt right, I felt the need to not only speak on the cause but contribute to it in a bigger way,” Tasman says. “I reached out to Samara of the Dhadjowa Foundation and with her lead I was able to put this together. The work they are doing is important and unfortunately still needed and if I can point people in the direction of supporting the cause in a way that is action based I will.”

Here, Tasman has linked up with the likes of BARKAA, Kobie Dee, Rox Lavi, RIAH and more for an event at The Lansdowne this Thursday, with 100% of the profits to be donated to the Dhadjowa Foundation. “I chose these artists because of my connection to them and what they represent,” Tasman says. “Barkaa and Kobie are doing amazingly for themselves and their communities at large. Rox is on the come up and in a great spot and RIAH has a bright future and represents her heritage incredibly.”

Also included in the lineup is Tasman’s dad AKA Will Grilla AKA trailblazing rapper Wire MC. “As for bringing my father along it was an obvious choice,” Tasman says. “I heard him say ‘Freedom Before Peace’ in 2004 and he is the reason this fundraiser has its name and I am able to do what I do.”
