The name James Adams might not be too familiar to the average punter, but if you’ve been anywhere near the Sydney (or Australian) music scene in the past few years, chances are you’ll have probably seen his pics. Deftly capturing moments on and off stage of artists in their most hysteric, vulnerable, and often unfiltered state, his portfolio speaks for itself. That said, it can speak to you when exhibits at Jameson’s Rounds At The Royal on December 15th.
Naturally, there aren’t too many people in the Australian music industry better positioned to curate a rock and roll show than James. Having shot countless gigs over the years, we were curious as to how he came to choose the acts on the Rounds At The Royal event lineup… so we asked. Check out the words straight from the shooter’s mouth below and head here to register for the event:
I was aware that These New South Wales taped up their nipples for performances long before I knew any of their songs. It’s a testament to their sound that now when I think of them I don’t think of taped nipples, I think of the hook in ‘Cholesterol Heart’ or the nostalgic guitar tone in ‘In The Light Of Day’. I’m glad the party starts during the day because you’ll need your sunglasses for their unrelenting light show.

Flying Machine isn’t a familiar name, yet. But it is to me and it will be to you soon. I’ve known brother Crispy and Gory since they were teens and have heard their different bands over the years. When Rudy, from The Delta Riggs, produced this album and sent it to me I knew the brothers had found the band that was them. They range from surf/psych to heaving punk with similarities to King Gizzard and Ty Segall. I wasn’t sure how a 3 piece could pull off that sound but I saw them live recently and it was the nail in the coffin. I knew I had to book them. Primarily for me, but also for you.

Earlier this year I went to King Street Crawl. My hands were totally full all day but somehow my mate convinced me to run up the street with him to see Baby Beef. Knowing his music taste I was surprised to say the least with what I saw. I won’t give too much away but I’ll say it’s hard not to dance when everyone else is.

In the early days of DMAs, whenever I’d try to take a photo of Tom Crandles, their bass player, he’d always turn away. I didn’t know if he was shy or just hated me. But now he’s fronting his own band so I guess he isn’t shy…. he hates me. Anyway, his new band Prudence is really tasteful and inviting and I think it’ll be a perfect way to start the day.
To fire up the vibes from the get go we’ve got Gab (from Gold Alpha Bravo & Jagwar Ma) on the desks slicing and dicing…. that’s DJ term.

Sunday the 15th of December is going to be a doozy. It’s going to kick off. But if you can’t make that day it’s not all bad as every Sunday in Summer, The Royal will play host to the House Band. With what they lack in creativity for a band name they make up for in passion towards classics as each week they choose a different band/artist to pay homage to. I’ve heard whispers ranging from Fleetwood Mac to the Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet soundtrack. Another reason to get psyched is that you can drink guilt-free in the knowledge that all merchandise proceeds and $1 from each Jameson purchased will go towards the NSW Rural Fire Service. I’m really glad we can give something back to the tireless firies who have been getting slammed for the past month. Fingers crossed it’s calmed down by then and we can buy our hero’s a drink or 6. Speaking of community spirit I’m really stoked that for summer there’s a local joint we can trust will always be good to go on Sundays. I’ve missed the consistence in being able to see live music, have some atmosphere and some cold drinks to see the week out. But it’s back baby!
