Out today via Mozaick Records, ‘Running To You’ was produced by label-mates and frequent collaborators thatboykwame and Matt ‘xiro’ Fioravanti, with musical features from her talented band. You’d be forgiven for initially thinking that Kali Uchis had dropped the track under a new moniker – with Mel Bailey’s extensive travels through the Americas cited as key influences behind the song’s rich instrumentation and overall feel – but that parallel is outgrown by the time the chorus rolls around and Mel Bailey’s unique honeyed voice aches with the realisation of her feelings of powerlessness in certain situations.
On the track she says: “We all have a tendency to rely on someone or something else for external validation at times. It’s extremely important to recognise when you are falling into that behaviour and learn how to seek your own reassurance too.”
‘Running To You’ is the first taste from Mel Bailey’s upcoming EP March which further explores her journey of self discovery and empowerment. Give it a first spin below, and keep up with Mel Bailey via instagram here.
